Details & Inspection Notes

This is a used Tohatsu MFS90AETL, a 90 hp four-stroke four-cylinder outboard carried on a 20-inch shaft, steered by remote mechanical control, started electrically, and weighed on Tohatsu's own spec sheet at 392 lbs. As a used unit it runs the same core engine as the current MFS90AETL rather than an older or detuned version.

What the design is built around

Tohatsu pairs this engine's 4-2-1 exhaust tuning with its own ECU programming so the motor comes off the hole with strong acceleration and keeps pulling toward top speed once the boat is up on plane, rather than flattening out mid-range. EFI handles fuel metering across that range instead of a carburetor needing periodic adjustment.

Buying a used outboard

Because this unit has already seen service, have it inspected, or ask us about its history, before trusting it the way a brand-new motor would be trusted; wear items like water-pump impellers and sacrificial anodes are worth checking regardless of how smoothly it idles on a test run. None of that changes the core spec: 1995cc, four cylinders, and a 5000-6000 rpm full-throttle range.

Fitment

Confirm the 20-inch shaft is correct for your transom; that measurement does not change whether the engine is bought new or used. Steering is remote mechanical, so a console or control box is required rather than a tiller handle.
