Details & Inspection Notes

Hughes Performance builds the Competition Transmission 28-4-76B2D as a new 2-speed automatic rated for up to 1,250 horsepower, aimed at drag racing rather than street use. Inside, a 1.76 first gear ratio works through a billet planetary set cut from 9310 gears, and the valve body combines full manual control with a reverse-pattern layout and Hughes' Pro III trans-brake.

Why a trans-brake changes how you launch

The Pro III trans-brake lets a driver hold the transmission against forward and reverse at once at the line, then release instantly at the start, which is the main reason racers favor this configuration over a simple forward-pattern valve body. A steel clutch hub backs up that hard launch by resisting the torque spikes a trans-brake creates.

Case, cooling, and certification

The aluminum case wears a black finish and uses a short, 1.625-inch tail shaft sized for dragster-style chassis, while a deep aluminum pan adds fluid capacity to help the unit hold a stable temperature across repeated runs. SFI 4.1 and SFI 30.1 certification, with the safety liner and shield built in, come standard rather than as an add-on.

Will this bolt up like a stock automatic? It runs a reverse pattern with full manual control, so it drives differently from a factory automatic and needs a shifter built for that layout.

Startup & Installation Checklist
