Details & Inspection Notes

The BF40D4LHA is a tiller-steered, 40 HP, three-cylinder Honda four-stroke on a 20-inch shaft, built around an 808cc block with programmed electronic fuel injection and Honda's BLAST low-speed torque boost for quicker hole shots. Electric start, gas-assisted tilt strut. New.

What it is built for

Because steering runs through the tiller handle rather than a remote console, this suits smaller boats where the operator steers by hand right at the engine. BLAST kicks in on a quick movement of the throttle to help the hull come onto plane faster, and Lean Burn Control adjusts the air-fuel mix at cruising speed for better fuel economy on longer runs. Full throttle falls between 5000 and 6000 rpm across the rev range of the three-cylinder block, with electronic fuel injection smoothing out cold starts too.

What to check before buying

This engine mounts with a tiller handle rather than cable-steer hardware, so confirm the boat is rigged for that, and size a propeller separately for the boat and typical load it will carry.

What comes with it

A charging system, the gas-assisted tilt strut, and a printed owner's manual all come with this engine, backed by Honda's five-year factory warranty.

Q: What does BLAST do? It boosts low-speed torque on a quick throttle movement to help the boat accelerate onto plane.

Startup & Installation Checklist
