Details & Inspection Notes

The BF15D3SHS is Honda's 15 hp tiller outboard on a 15-inch shaft, built around a two-cylinder, 350cc four-stroke that is carbureted and reaches full throttle somewhere between 4500 and 5500 rpm. Starting is electric with a manual pull cord as backup, so a dead battery still leaves a way to get the engine running, and at 109 pounds one person can lift it onto a small transom alone. This is a new unit, carrying Honda's 5-year warranty.

Matching it to a boat

Fifteen inches is the shorter shaft Honda offers in this 15 hp family; measure your transom depth before ordering, since a shaft that's too short or too long for the hull changes where the propeller sits once the boat is moving. Tiller steering keeps the throttle twist grip and gear shift on the motor handle itself, suited to a smaller craft steered by hand at the stern rather than from a wheel up front.

What arrives with it

Honda equips this motor with a propeller already fitted, the charging system for keeping a battery topped up, a 3-gallon tank that mounts outside the cowling with its own feed line, and a lanyard kill switch, alongside the printed manual.

Common questions

Can I still start it if the battery dies? Yes, the pull cord works without any electrics. Does it tilt by hand or by switch? By hand; power tilt is not part of this build.
