Details & Inspection Notes

This 2017 Yamaha VF250X is the base trim of Yamaha's 250 HP V6 V MAX SHO, a new 4.2-liter engine on a 20-inch shaft. Where the LA and XA trims add certain rigging features, this base build keeps the same core powerhead at a simpler spec.

The powerhead underneath the trim level

Plasma-fused sleeveless cylinder bores, double overhead cams and four large valves per cylinder are the same architecture found across the SHO V6 range, configured here without some add-on convenience items.

Specs for this build

Dry weight is listed at 555 lbs, with mounting centers 28.6 inches apart and a maximum steering angle of 35 degrees off-center. The final drive is a 1.75:1 ratio, and alternator output is 50 amps, with 46 already flowing once the engine settles to a 1,000 RPM idle.

What's the oil capacity? With the filter fitted, this engine holds 6.7 liters, or 7.1 quarts.

Starter type? Electric, with power trim and tilt.

Tilt and trim? Tilt travel of 66 degrees, trim moving -4 through +16 degrees; compression ratio is 10.3:1.

Fuel and emissions? Regular unleaded at minimum 89 octane, rated for up to 10 percent ethanol; emissions come in at a C.A.R.B. three-star rating.

Cooling is water/thermostatic and gear shift runs forward, neutral and reverse. This one is covered three years for pleasure use, three for government use, one for commercial use.
