Details & Inspection Notes

Yamaha's 2017 F6 F6SMHA pairs the same 6 hp, single-cylinder, 139 cc block as the F6LMHA with the short, 15-inch (S) shaft instead, bringing dry weight down to 60 lbs. Shaft length, not horsepower, is what decides which one fits a given boat, and both trims share the same pressurized lubrication and five-step anti-corrosion coating.

Confirming fitment

Match transom height to the 15-inch shaft here, since the taller L-shaft F6 sits differently on the hull. Centers for mounting sit 28.6 inches apart, and steering travels 90 degrees off-center each way with tilt reaching 69 degrees across 5 positions. A stainless steering tube, shift shaft, prop shaft and driveshaft back up that corrosion coating, with sacrificial anodes added for saltwater use.

Durability and running

Lubrication runs pressurized rather than splash-fed, fed by a CDI-ignition, manual-start motor. Octane needs to clear 87 on regular unleaded fuel, while the oil fill comes in around six-tenths of a liter. Compression reads 8.9:1, exhaust exits above the propeller, and the carburetor is tuned for a C.A.R.B. rating of 3 stars.

What starter does it use? A pull cord only; there is no electric-start option on this trim. How is it cooled? Water cooling with thermostatic control, and no battery is needed to keep it running. What is the gear ratio? 2.08:1, forward, neutral and reverse.

Startup & Installation Checklist

  • Inspect all external gaskets, seals, spark plugs and timing components prior to installation.
  • Refill engine oil, transmission gear oil and coolant to manufacturer-specified capacities before initial cranking.
  • Prime the lubrication system and verify ECU wiring pinouts, sensors, and ground connections.
  • Startup warranty covers internal lubricated components, cylinder heads, and engine block for 30 days from delivery.
