Details & Inspection Notes
Honda's 2017 BF20D3LHT puts electric start and power tilt on the same 20-inch-shaft, 20 hp tiller platform as the newer model year, heavier than the manual-only version of this engine thanks to the added starter and tilt motor. PGM ignition, water cooling, and a 5000-to-6000 rpm full-throttle band carry over from the manual build, carbureted from a 3.2-gallon tank, with a 12-amp alternator sized for the extra electrics.
What changes with electric start and power tilt
Push-button starting replaces the pull cord, and a switch raises and lowers the running angle instead of a hand lever, worth having if you trim often or trailer the boat regularly. Whether a manual pull-cord backup also rides along on this particular unit isn't settled, so confirm that with us if it matters to your plans.
Features built into this engine
Positive lubrication through the wet-sump system supports durability under load, Honda's "four fronts" corrosion protection helps fight off salt and spray, and the engine carries a 3-star CARB emissions rating. The 20-inch shaft calls for the same transom depth as the manual version of this motor, and the gear case offers forward, neutral, and reverse.
Common questions
What's the final drive ratio? 2.08:1, with forward, neutral, and reverse gears. Is it rated for saltwater? Yes. What warranty applies? Five years, on this new motor.
